Ronaldo was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He started studying
music and drums at the age of 16 at the school of Maestro Guerra-Peixe in
Rio. At the age of 21, he received a scholarship to study “Arranging and
Composition” at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, in the United States
of America.
He studied jazz drumming with Mr. Alan Dawson, Mr. Gary Chafee and Mr.
Joe Hunt, and piano at the New England Conservatory of Music with Mr. Ran
Blake.
In 1971, Ronaldo joined the band of Astrud Gilberto and toured the U.S.
Back in Brazil in 1973, he taught drums in Rio de Janeiro and was active
in Rio`s music scene, performing in night clubs and concert venues.
In 1975, he returned to the U.S. to finish his studies at Berklee. He
was active in the night club scene playing with notable American and
Brazilian musicians in Boston and New York including Charlie Rouse, John
Scofield, Raul de Souza and Victor Assis Brasil. Ronaldo was a founding
member of the group “Coisa-Nova” along with trumpet player Claudio Roditi.
Upon returning to Brazil in 1978, he began playing and recording with
some major Brazilian artists such as Chico Buarque (and recorded the album
“Caetano e Chico Juntos e ao vivo”), MPB4, Quarteto em Cy, Leny Andrade,
Raul Seixas and Gonzaguinha (and recorded the album “Recado”). During this
time, he toured Europe with the famous samba singer Beth Carvalho.
In 1987, Ronaldo again traveled to the United States, forming the group
“Yes Brasil Band” which toured the east coast playing jazz festivals and
making appearances on television and radio.
In addition to playing drums, Ronaldo is proficient on Brazilian
percussion. He performs on the Berimbau, Cuíca, Tamborim, Agogô,
Reco-reco, Surdo, Chocalhos, Apitos and others.
